InGround trampolines for schools

An InGround trampoline is set into the ground, with a low raised edge roughly 10 to 20 cm high. BERG lists 8 grey Elite InGround models that we stock as approved for public use, from €1,109.

What InGround means

Most of the frame sits below ground level in a hole. What you see is the jump mat and a padded edge that stands a little proud of the grass, roughly 10 to 20 cm.

Because it is low, there is little height to climb on to it or to come off it. It is also a fixed feature: once it is in, it stays where it is.

Who it suits

  • A school that has a permanent spot for it, on ground that can be dug.
  • A school that wants the trampoline low to the ground rather than up on legs.
  • A board that is ready to arrange and pay for the groundwork and the shock-absorbing surface around it, as well as the trampoline.
  • A school where an adult will be there whenever it is used. BERG says it is not for unattended public use.

If you cannot dig, or may need to move it later, look at the above-ground models. If you want it fully level with the ground, see FlatGround.

BERG Elite InGround trampoline in grey with a Safety Net Deluxe

With a net or without

Each InGround size comes two ways: with BERG's Safety Net Deluxe, or without a net. BERG calls the models without a net SPORTS.

BERG recommends a safety net. Its home-use InGround manual goes further and does not recommend use without a net by children under 14. Every primary school pupil is under 14. So for a primary school we suggest a model with the net, and we show those first.

BERG's public-use manual says a net should be replaced every 5 years, or sooner if it stops doing its job. The certificate we hold is for a model with the net: the Elite InGround 330 Grey + Safety Net Deluxe.

BERG's rules for use

From BERG's public-use manual for the Elite InGround, which we send with your quotation.

  • One user at a time. This is BERG's rule, not a suggestion.
  • An adult supervises whenever it is in use. BERG says it is not for unattended public use.
  • BERG does not recommend its trampolines for children under 6, and says they are not suitable under 3.
  • BERG recommends a safety net. Its home-use InGround manual goes further and does not recommend use without one by children under 14.
  • No shoes, a dry mat, and no somersaults.
  • Maximum user weight is 100 to 120 kg depending on size.

One at a time means a class takes turns. Plan who supervises and how the queue is managed before you decide on a size.

BERG's list also has the Safety Net Deluxe XL on the 430 and 520, and a Levels version of the 430. We can quote for those on request.

What "approved for public use" means. BERG lists these grey Elite models as approved for public use, tested by the independent Dutch institute Keurmerkinstituut. The certificate we hold, for the Elite InGround 330 Grey + Safety Net Deluxe (no. 148394, inspected 24 January 2022), states that it meets the Dutch playground equipment decree, assessed against EN 1176-1:2017. See BERG's list of approved models.

The school or setting stays responsible for local rules, correct installation, warning notices, a daily check with a logbook, and maintenance. We send BERG's public-use manual and warning notice for your model with your quotation. Check with your insurer before you order.

The space and the surface it needs

BERG's public-use manual for the Elite InGround requires:

  • At least 2 metres clear of trees, fences and any other obstacle, all the way round.
  • At least 7 metres of clear height, measured from the ground.
  • A shock-absorbing surface 1.5 metres wide around the trampoline.
  • Level ground. Not concrete, asphalt or any other hard surface.
  • A spot that is not close to other play equipment, such as swings, slides, pools or other play structures.

So the clear area is the trampoline plus 2 metres on every side. For the 430 that is a little over 8 metres across. Your insurer may ask for more, or for fencing, so check their conditions before you fix the position.

Budget for the surround

The shock-absorbing surface is BERG's requirement, not an extra. For what counts as suitable, the manual points to table 4 of EN 1176-1:2017 and says to allow for a falling height of 1,200 mm.

We do not supply or fit surfacing, and we do not price it. Ask your installer or a surfacing supplier to cost it before the board sets a budget, and ask your insurer whether it has its own conditions.

Putting it in, and looking after it

An InGround trampoline needs a hole dug and the trampoline fitted by a competent installer who follows BERG's manual. BERG puts correct installation on the owner, and the manual treats the way it is set into the ground as a warranty matter.

We do not install. We sell and deliver. If you want it fitted for you, we can put you in touch with an independent installer, and you agree the work and the price directly with them.

Once it is in, BERG's public-use manual requires:

  • An adult supervising whenever it is used.
  • A safety check every day, written up in a logbook.
  • An inspection of the space under the trampoline at least once a year, and after a rainy period.
  • BERG's warning notice displayed near it. We send the notice for your model.
  • Repairs by a professional, and no changes to the trampoline unless BERG approves them.
Installation and upkeep: who does what

Questions about InGround trampolines

What is an InGround trampoline?

It is a trampoline set into the ground rather than standing on legs. The BERG Elite InGround has a low raised edge that sits roughly 10 to 20 cm above the ground, with the rest of the frame below ground level in a hole.

Does a school need the safety net on an InGround trampoline?

BERG recommends a safety net. Its home-use InGround manual goes further and does not recommend use without a net by children under 14. Every primary school pupil is under 14, so for primary schools we suggest the models with a Safety Net Deluxe.

How much does an InGround trampoline for a school cost?

On our shop the BERG Elite InGround models with a Safety Net Deluxe start at €1,449, and the models without a net start at €1,109. Delivery is free. That is the price of the trampoline only. Digging, fitting and the shock-absorbing surface BERG requires around it are separate, and you agree them with whoever does the work.

Do you dig the hole and fit it?

No. We sell and deliver. An InGround trampoline needs a hole dug and the trampoline fitted by a competent installer who follows BERG's manual. We can put you in touch with an independent installer, and you agree the work directly with them.

How much space does it need?

BERG's public-use manual asks for at least 2 metres clear of trees, fences and other obstacles all round, and at least 7 metres of clear height measured from the ground. Add the 2 metres on every side to the size of the trampoline. It also requires a shock-absorbing surface 1.5 metres wide around the trampoline, and it prohibits installing on a hard surface or close to other play equipment.

Does it need a special surface around it?

Yes. BERG's public-use manual for the Elite InGround says a shock-absorbing base must be installed to a width of 1.5 metres around the trampoline. It refers to table 4 of EN 1176-1:2017 and says to allow for a falling height of 1,200 mm. We do not supply or fit surfacing. Have your installer or a surfacing supplier price it before you set a budget.

What is the maximum user weight?

BERG gives 100 kg for the 330, 110 kg for the 380 and 120 kg for the 430, for one user. We have not seen BERG's figure for the oval Grand 520, so ask us and we will get it.

What checks does it need once it is in?

BERG's public-use manual requires a safety check every day, recorded in a logbook. It covers the jumping mat, the springs, the frame connections, the protective edge, the warning notice and the stakes. The manual also says to inspect the trampoline before each use, and to inspect the space under it at least once a year and after a rainy period. Your insurer may set its own inspection conditions on top.

On warranty: BERG's warranty is 1 year when a trampoline is used at a school or in any other public setting. The longer warranty advertised for home buyers does not apply. Read the school buying guide.
