Above-ground trampolines for schools

An above-ground trampoline stands on legs, so nothing is dug. BERG lists 5 grey Elite models of this kind that we stock as approved for public use, each with a safety net, from €1,449.

What above ground means

The frame stands on legs on top of the ground, and a safety net runs round the jump mat. BERG's name for this kind is Regular.

It is the simplest of the three to put in, because there is no groundwork. It can also be moved to another part of the grounds later, which the two set-in types cannot.

Always with a net

BERG only approves the Regular models for public use with a safety net. There is no above-ground model without a net on BERG's list, so we do not offer one to schools.

Who it suits

  • A school that cannot dig, or does not want to.
  • A school that may need to move the trampoline, for building work or a change of yard layout.
  • A primary school that wants a model with a net and has no groundwork to arrange.

The step up, and the entrance

Because it is on legs, the jump mat is raised off the ground. Pupils have to climb up and go in through the opening in the net, and come out the same way.

That makes the entrance the place for the supervising adult to stand: to see one pupil in, and see them out again before the next one goes in.

If you would rather have little or no height to climb, look at InGround or FlatGround.

BERG's rules for use

  • One user at a time. This is BERG's rule, not a suggestion.
  • An adult supervises whenever it is in use. BERG says it is not for unattended public use.
  • BERG does not recommend its trampolines for children under 6, and says they are not suitable under 3.
  • BERG recommends a safety net. Its home-use InGround manual goes further and does not recommend use without one by children under 14.
  • No shoes, a dry mat, and no somersaults.
  • Maximum user weight is 100 to 120 kg depending on size.

These are from BERG's public-use manual for the Elite InGround. Ask us for the manual for your model. The net does not change the one-at-a-time rule or the need for an adult.

BERG's list also has the Safety Net Deluxe XL on the 430 and 520, and a Levels version of the 430. We can quote for those on request.

What "approved for public use" means. BERG lists these grey Elite models as approved for public use, tested by the independent Dutch institute Keurmerkinstituut. The certificate we hold, for the Elite InGround 330 Grey + Safety Net Deluxe (no. 148394, inspected 24 January 2022), states that it meets the Dutch playground equipment decree, assessed against EN 1176-1:2017. See BERG's list of approved models.

The school or setting stays responsible for local rules, correct installation, warning notices, a daily check with a logbook, and maintenance. We send BERG's public-use manual and warning notice for your model with your quotation. Check with your insurer before you order.

The space it needs

BERG's public-use manual for the Elite InGround requires:

  • At least 2 metres clear of trees, fences and any other obstacle, all the way round.
  • At least 7 metres of clear height, measured from the ground.
  • Level ground. Not concrete, asphalt or any other hard surface.
  • A spot that is not close to other play equipment, such as swings, slides or pools.

That manual also requires a shock-absorbing surface 1.5 metres wide around an InGround trampoline. We have not seen the public-use manual for the above-ground models, so ask us for the manual for your model and check what it says about the surface before you set a budget. The same space is needed again if you move it.

Putting it together, and looking after it

BERG puts correct assembly and installation on the owner. We sell and deliver and do not install. If you want it assembled for you, we can put you in touch with an independent installer, and you agree the work directly with them.

After that comes the upkeep. BERG's public-use manual for the Elite InGround requires adult supervision, a safety check every day written up in a logbook, and BERG's warning notice displayed near the trampoline. It says a safety net should be replaced every 5 years, or sooner if it stops doing its job. We send the manual and the notice for your model.

Questions about above-ground trampolines

What is an above-ground trampoline?

It is a trampoline that stands on legs on top of the ground, with a safety net around the jump mat. BERG calls these models Regular. Nothing is dug.

Can a school buy an above-ground Elite without a net?

Not as a public-use model. BERG's public-use list has no Regular model without a net, so every above-ground trampoline we show to schools comes with one.

How much does an above-ground trampoline for a school cost?

On our shop the BERG Elite Regular models with a safety net start at €1,449. Delivery is free across Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Can it be moved?

Yes, in the sense that it is not set into the ground, so it can be taken to another part of the grounds. Wherever it goes it needs the same clear space around and above it, and the school should check it over again before it is used.

Who puts it together?

The school, or someone the school appoints. BERG puts correct assembly and installation on the owner. We sell and deliver and do not install. If you want it assembled for you, we can put you in touch with an independent installer, and you agree the work directly with them.

How much space does it need?

BERG's public-use manual for the Elite InGround asks for at least 2 metres clear of trees, fences and other obstacles all round, and at least 7 metres of clear height measured from the ground. It also prohibits installing on a hard surface or close to other play equipment. We have not seen the public-use manual for the above-ground models, so ask us for the manual for your model, and ask your insurer whether it wants more.

What is the maximum user weight?

BERG gives 100 kg for the 330, 110 kg for the 380 and 120 kg for the 430, for one user. We have not seen BERG's figure for the oval Grand 520 or the rectangular Ultim 500, so ask us and we will get it.

On warranty: BERG's warranty is 1 year when a trampoline is used at a school or in any other public setting. The longer warranty advertised for home buyers does not apply. Read the school buying guide.
